The Fruit of Grisaia

The Fruit of Grisaia is a classic Japanese visual novel that has been popular since it first came out in 2011. After watching the anime series, I was curious about the novel that inspired it along with several spin-offs. The Fruit of Grisaia ended up being a deep story full of everything that makes an erotic novel worth reading.

Classic Visual Novel Style

If you love choice-based game play, you might need to take a little time to adjust to The Fruit of Grisaia. This game is very light on choice, with your main job as the reader being to click for more text. Occasionally, you do get a choice to make, but for the most part, this is purely a visual novel. You are there to read, and what a story it is.

The story is so powerful, that it resulted in two additional visual novels, the Labyrinth of Grisaia and the Eden of Grisaia.

Student Life

The story centers around a school for wayward souls. The Fruit of Grisaia is in reference to fruit that has rolled too far from the tree. Essentially students here have a bad rap sheet, and the school is trying to get them back on the right path before it is too late.

When the story opens there are 5 female students enrolled at the school, each with their own issues. They’ve managed to attain a certain rhythm at that academy, but everything changes when the first male student is enrolled. Be prepared, this isn’t some light rom-com (although there’s plenty of that in there too.) There’s some serious psychological drama dressing up this story. Each and every girl has a heck of a story behind them.

Choose Your Favorite

The story is told from the perspective of Yuuji Kazami, the new male student. He is an ex-military who at 17 is just trying to live a normal teenage life. Of course, choosing to try and have the normal high school experience at a prison-like school is somewhat questionable, but that’s what makes the story so interesting. There is a route for every single potential pairing in the game, allowing for hours of game play. Every route has new, amazing content to explore, including some hot scenes. It’s worth playing all of them to enjoy all these very different personalities.

Beautiful Artwork

The story is great, but it’s a visual novel for the visuals. Luckily, these novels came out before AI became such a strong force in the game world, virtually guaranteeing this art is not AI. Instead, it’s beautiful, anime style artwork done in great detail.

Each girl is unique. Their artwork matches their personalities, and the artwork does a great job of portraying their feelings at the given time. The colors change to suit the mood, whether it’s a light hearted moment of comedy, or the black reality of the student’s past.

Extremely Hot H-Scenes

The artwork in the visual novel truly makes the story, and it turns out it also makes the H-scenes. While most of the sex scenes in The Fruit of Grisaia are your usual vanilla sex scenes, the artwork truly makes them hotter than ordinary scenes.

Although the novel is fairly long and you have quite a few reading between scenes, you’ll really enjoy them when you finally get there.

Beautiful Music

One final point to this story is the music. Once again, the music works with the story and the art to add to the experience of this visual novel. The music for sadder scenes in particular match the mood and pace of the story perfectly. The Fruit of Grisaia is one of those few, rare novels where everything works together to make a perfect story come alive.

Popular for a Reason!

The Fruit of Grisaia was so popular that it lead to two more related stories coming out. If you enjoyed The Fruit of Grisaia, you’ll also want to check out The Labyrinth of Grisaia and The Eden of Grisaia as well. These games carry on the story in The Fruit of Grisaia, but instead of feeling like a cash grab, they add to the story. You won’t be disappointed in this trilogy, especially if you liked the first one.

The Fruit of Grisaia is an eroge visual novel that describes the life of an unusual boy in an equally unusual school. Yuji Kazami lost his parents early and was forced to survive in a dysfunctional foster family, tightly connected to the world of crime. However, the constant struggle soon bored the still teenager and, using his connections, he enrolled in a private school. However, the school turned out to be too strange, because there was only one class with five sociophobic girls. Will the former criminal be able to find an approach to them?
