I have always had a thing for witches and that is what initially drew me to MAGICAL DEATHPAIR. Hey, I am not meaning that in a purely sexual way either… although, I do find witches hot. I have just always thought that witches were really cool and there are not as many lewd games or video games in general based around witches as you would think. So when a lewd visual novel like this comes across my radar you better believe that I am giving it a try. I was very impressed with the story here and while it was a little rough around the edges, for the most part, I thought that this was fantastic stuff.

A Shattered Peace

Let me start by saying that the setup for the story in MAGICAL DEATHPAIR is awesome! The game takes place in modern day Tokyo and there is a group of witches that oversee things and make sure that things are as they should be and people are safe. However, out of nowhere this monstrous creature appears and people start to go missing. To figure out what is going on, 16 of the best witches are chosen to investigate so that whatever is happening can be stopped. Honestly, I was hooked right from the setup and I think that if you love witches and murder mystery-type stuff, you will really get invested here.

Trust No One

Deep Throat in the X-Files was right, wasn’t he? Anyway, the way the story in MAGICAL DEATHPAIR is presented is very cool. It plays like a “who can you really trust” kind of story as you try and figure out who is telling the truth and who may be holding things back. I do not want to go into spoilers here, but the game kind of “resets” in a very unique way and that just opens up a whole can of worms as what is really happening starts to take shape. Now, this is a game that has been translated and while I would say that most of the story is fine, there are a few parts that come across as a tad weird in the way they are worded, but that could be the translation.

A Novel Visual Novel Experience

Calling MAGICAL DEATHPAIR a lewd visual novel may seem a bit weird as there is actual “gameplay” here other than just reading the story and making choices. You have to actually walk from point a to point b during the game, but everything else happens and you just watch. For example, there are some pretty epic and bloody battles in the game that are exciting, but you just watch them play out. To be honest, this is a pretty novel approach for a lewd visual novel to take and I thought that it was fun. However, I can also say that I have a buddy who played this and he said that he wished it just told the story without making him walk for a minute or two in order to get the next scene to play so I guess it is something of a personal taste if this clicks with you or not.

A Witchingly Dark Time

While MAGICAL DEATHPAIR is made with RPG Maker, this is such a great looking game. The “gameplay” sections have nice and smooth fights and I actually like how dark the whole thing is, the blood splatter on the floor in some of the sections is really cool. The actual character portraits and the high quality CGs and drawings are all very well done and I was kind of shocked at how brutal, dark, and bloody the game was. Some of the character designs and the way that they move and the facial expressions look fantastic and help get you even more invested in the story.

8.5

If you love witches, the supernatural, and dark and disturbing stories, MAGICAL DEATHPAIR is a game that you will have a lot of fun with. I would say that a game like Corpse Party is a good comparison for the way the story is presented here. I will say that so far only the first chapter has been translated into English, I ended up using my pal, Google Lens to translate the second chapter.

Pros:

  • I loved the lore of the witches in this game
  • The way the story resets is so cool
  • I was very invested and unsure of who I could really trust
  • The game looks amazing!

Cons:

  • The translation felt a little stiff/off in a couple of parts
  • As of writing, chapter two has not been translated into English
